Denver is a global city named the best place to live in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The largest city in the state features major corporations including Newmont Mining Corporation, Molson Coors Brewing Company, Arrow Electronics Inc., and DISH Network. Denver Public Schools provides education for 73,000 students throughout the city. The University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver and University of Denver are among the many colleges and universities located in the region. World-class healthcare includes University of Colorado Hospital, Porter Adventist Hospital and Sky Ridge Medical Center.
Montana City was established as a mining town on the South Platte River during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush in 1858. Later that year, General William Larimer from Kansas staked claim to the area naming it Denver City after Kansas Governor James W. Denver. In 1861, Colorado, Arapahoe County and Denver City were formally created.
Weather in Denver is described as semi-arid continental. There are four distinct seasons and modest precipitation. Sudden changes in weather can occur along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains; however Denver does receive ample sunshine on 300 days out of the year.
Denver contains more than 200 parks and a large network of community gardens in addition to access to all the splendor of the Rockies. The Denver Metro is home to the 16th Street Mall, Four Mile Historic Park, Larimer Square, Elitch Gardens and the United States Mint. Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre was recognized as America’s best amphitheatre by Rolling Stone Magazine. The Denver Beer Trail is comprised of around 100 local brewpubs, breweries and tap rooms.
For sporting enthusiasts Denver is well equipped for cyclists, golfers, skateboarding, fishing and much more. The city hosts the National Western Stock Show, Colorado Classic and Rocky Mountain Showdown in addition to being home to eight professional sports franchises including the NFL’s Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies of the MLB.
Events such as the Cherry Creek Arts Festival and Colorado Dragon Boat Festival are numerous and occur throughout the year.
